Historical Background of the 1960's

The first pride parade ever held was the Stonewall Riot in 1969, which marked the beginning of the LGBT rights movement. In order to find out why this pride parade emerged, we looked into the social issues of the 1960s.

In the 1960s, there were many civil rights issues in the United States, especially in terms of race. This was the period in which African Americans were being discriminated, which caused the rise of many race groups fighting against it such as the Black Panthers.

LGBT people were also victims of discrimination. For example, bars refused to serve LGBT customers, and LGBT people were constantly arrested on the streets. There were many civil laws that restricted their rights.

After the Stonewall Riot, which ignited the LGBT rights movement, new gay rights organizations were formed such as the Gay Liberation Front (GLF). Many people were inspired to make action, leading this to become an issue of utmost attention even today.
